A majority of all new in-ground pools that are installed in the U.S. use a salt system. So why the switch? Here are just a few of the benefits of installing a saltwater pool vs. a chlorine pool:
Salt water pools can be easier to maintain
Let us first preface by saying no matter what kind of pool you choose, there will always be required maintenance. However, salt water pools are much more convenient than chlorine pools because you won’t need to worry about constantly adding chemicals on your own. When you install a salt system in your pool, that system will automatically convert salt to chlorine and add the necessary amount to your water. Since you won’t need to stock up on the chemicals needed to chlorinate your pool, you’ll also cut your pool maintenance costs significantly.
Saltwater pools don’t irritate skin and eyes as much as chlorine pools do
Swimming in highly chlorinated water is, as you might imagine, not great for your skin or eyes. Chlorine can dry out your skin, causing you to feel itchy and uncomfortable, and it can also irritate your eyes, especially if you open them underwater. In some extreme cases, extensive exposure to high levels of chlorine can even have negative health effects. With significantly less amounts of chlorine used in saltwater pools, the water becomes softer and more comfortable for swimmers.
Other considerations
Salt cells do not function when the water temperature is below 40F (usually during winter). During this period liquid chlorine must be added. Depending on use, cells could be required to be replaced every 2-3 years. Salt cells can be an expensive item. Salt cells should cleaned every 6 months. Care must be taken not to damage the salt cell during cleanings. Proper care should be taken during the cleaning process. This should normally bedone by a professional.
